“Empowering Minds: A Recap of the HEBU TUYAJENGE SYMPOSIUM on HIV Awareness and Prevention”

On June 29, 2024, the Sokoine University of Agriculture Student Organization (SUASO) proudly hosted the “Empowering Minds: HIV Awareness and Prevention through Music and Talent in Higher Learning Institutions” event, also known as the “HEBU TUYAJENGE SYMPOSIUM.” This initiative was a proactive response to the alarming findings from the Tanzania HIV Impact Survey 2022-2023, which highlighted a significant rise in HIV infections among youth aged 15-24, with this age group accounting for 40% of new infections.

The symposium aimed to raise awareness, encourage HIV testing, and engage students through a variety of interactive activities and performances. The event saw participation from key stakeholders, including representatives from the management of SUA, the National Council of People Living with HIV and AIDS in Tanzania (NACOPHA), the Tanzania Commission for AIDS (TACAIDS), the Morogoro Municipal Council, and the Office of the Regional Commissioner of Morogoro.

The program was rich and diverse, featuring welcoming remarks from the organizers, the inauguration of the Higher Education Students’ Forum, an insightful presentation on the current status of HIV infections among youth, a dynamic dialogue on HIV and youth, a lively question-and-answer session, and captivating entertainment from local artists.

This event not only provided valuable information but also fostered a sense of community and support among the students, making it a memorable and impactful experience for all who attended.
